"The Big Black Fans"
There was no air conditioning at Alice Drive back then so on really hot days the teacher would turn on the big black old floor fan at the back of the classroom to provide a breeze to help our sweat dry. (We didn’t get hot days off the way today’s kids do.) The fan in my classroom was really ancient, probably used by Thomas Edison himself, and made a buzzing sound. It would administer a little jolt of electricity if you touched it. Those of us wearing rubber-soled sneakers (PF Flyers with the magic wedge to make you run your fastest and jump your highest) would not get shocked but those who wore leather-soled shoes did. When the teacher was out of the room, those of us wearing sneakers would make a human chain, one holding the fan at one end and the one at the other end would touch someone sitting in their conductive metal desk providing them with a hair raising experience. Seems like I got shocked a lot.
