Does anyone remember our third grade teacher Mrs. Elmes taking us on a field trip to the Sumter Meat Processing Plant to see how our meat was processed? At first we saw packaged meats and then pink sides of pork hanging in a cold room. Then they took us into another room and shot a huge pig in the head, hoisted him up by his hind legs, and sliced his throat open with a great big knife spilling gallons of blood down a drain in the floor. The pig was kicking and screaming and blood was flying as we stood there within ten feet of the slaughter watching in absolute horror. I remember squeezing a classmate’s hand the entire time. Can you imagine the fallout if a third grade class experienced that today.
Memory by Francis Barr Strickland '71Remember that great marble game we used to play in the third grade called "Roly-Holy"?
We would make a hole in the dirt and in the hole place a few marbles. Then there was a lag line maybe 6 feet back from the hole. The player would stand behind the lag line and try to roll or throw a marble into the hole. If the marble falls into the hole the player wins all the marbles in the hole, if not the hole master wins the tossed marble. We all loved the game and at recess there would be lines of kids with their holes full of marbles shouting "ROLY-HOLY ... THREE IN THE HOLE!".
The game became so popular and so many marble were trading hands that Mrs Holden, the principle, banned playing for keeps. She said it was gambling. So we couldn't play to win marbles any more. Needless to say, that was the end of marble playing altogether because marbles were no fun unless you could play for keeps.
I remember the time when a hornet got into our third grade class and was causing quite a distraction. Our teacher, Mrs Elmes, told us to just ignore it and it wouldn't hurt anybody. So we tried that, as best we could, but it eventually lit on Charles Walker and promptly stung him on the cheek causing his face to swell up bad enough to go to the office, crying in extreme agony to see the nurse. Some of us thought the whole thing was pretty funny. Most of us felt bad for poor ol' Charles. But all of us learned a very important life lesson ... Ignore a hornet and he'll sting the living crap out of you.
