A.J. Moses home. First Sumter School District Graded School

The first graduation class of the new Sumter Graded School was in 1891 with 8 graduates.

The A.J. Moses School had grown so overcrowded in just two years that Mr. Duffie requested that a larger permanent school building be built on the southern corner of the old site of the Sumterville Academy known as Monument Square on the corner of Washington and Liberty Streets. The land was leased for 99 years from the Ladies Monumental Society and construction started in October 1891.
