The 1906 Sumter High School (SHS), S. C. football team photo taken after a 92-0 whipping of an uncertain opponent. It is said that the 1906 team only had one helmet for the entire team!

According to articles by J. Bossard Dick in the March 2, 1950 Sumter Daily Item & the May 17, 1950 Sesquicentennial Edition of the Sumter Daily Item, the first organized football team in Sumter was the 1901 team of Sumter Military Academy and Female Seminary (SMA); the 1902 SMA team went undefeated and unsecured upon; the 1925 SHS team only lost one game because someone put croton oil in the SHS pre-game meal; the 1939 team had 9 wins, 2 ties, and 1 loss; the 1949 team lost only one game by one point.
